Parking lots and airfields have been popping up all over the country, from the city limits of Austin to the suburbs of Philadelphia, where the airport and city of Boston have been using them for decades.
Here are a few tips to help you find the right place.
First, where do you live?
You want to make sure you’re in the right area, said Shannon Nye, a parking lot manager at San Francisco’s Golden Gate International Airport.
Parking lots are typically clustered in major cities and often in the central part of a city, she said.
But some areas have more parking than others.
“If you’re a small town, you’re probably in the middle of nowhere,” she said, “so you may want to be able to find parking on your own.”
You also want to know what’s available in your area.
If you’re interested in renting a car, look at the parking lot nearest you, said Sarah Gannon, spokeswoman for the National Association of Realtors.
If your parking is reserved, look for signs and signs of a business that’s leasing or leasing-controlled parking, such as garages or trailers, she added.
If there’s not a lot nearby, you may need to search online for parking, she explained.
You may also want a parking space that’s a few metres from the street, or closer to a building.
Parking spots are typically limited, so you may be able just to get by with the spot you have, she suggested.
A parking lot is typically a few hundred metres from your home or business, or a few kilometres from the nearest freeway or train station, according to Nye.
“It’s always best to find a parking spot that’s less than a kilometre from your house,” she explained, adding that you may also need to ask a friend or relative to help.
Parking spaces usually cost between $25 and $30 per night.
“You don’t need a lot of parking for a family of five or six,” she added, “but if you’re looking for a spot close to your home, it might be worth it.”
The key is to find an airfield, or where there are lots of cars to park, said Gannon.
“When you walk through a parking garage, you might see a lot going up.
But that’s because they’re all going the same way,” she advised.
A lot will be open and available to anyone who wants to park there, she noted.
“I think you’ll see a huge increase in usage, especially in the last few years.”
Some cities have already started to experiment with parking lots.
Last month, Minneapolis City Council approved an ordinance allowing residents to reserve parking spaces at the airport, city officials said.
The new plan calls for lots at both the airport’s airport parking lot in downtown Minneapolis and the airport-owned parking lot on the airport campus in St. Paul, as well as a lot at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
“We’ve always had lots,” said Michael Bauza, president of the Minneapolis Parking Authority.
“The only difference now is that they’re going to have to be reserved.”
